Typically, one of our buyers will be available to assist you right away. However, depending on the volume of customers, there may be a short wait. To avoid any potential delays, you can always call ahead and make an appointment. We look forward to serving you!
SORT
Firstly, we utilize an earth magnet to quickly determine if items are not gold or silver. Since gold and silver are not magnetic, passing an earth magnet over the jewelry allows us to instantly discern their authenticity. Unlike ordinary fridge magnets, earth magnets are powerful permanent magnets crafted from alloys of rare earth elements.

Next, we inspect for purity stamps, which indicate the gold purity and are generally a reliable method of identification. However, it’s not uncommon to encounter items stamped as solid gold that are actually gold-plated. While most stamps are visible to the naked eye, some may be stamped on the tiny posts of earrings or may be too worn down to decipher. To address this, we employ a jeweller’s loupe, which offers 20x magnification. We group the stamped items onto a sorting grid on our desk in front of you, while unstamped items are placed to the side for further examination.

KARATS
If no stamps are present, or if the piece is over 18 karats, or if the buyer desires to verify the stamp value of any items, we conduct testing using one of two methods. However, coins or bars of trusted karat and weight may bypass validation at the discretion of the gold buyer.

buying gold in canadaAcid Scratch Test

The acid scratch test involves scratching an item on a smooth touchstone (similar to slate), leaving a fine mark that does not damage the piece. If this test yields positive results, it may be the only test needed.

For unstamped items, we begin with 10kt acid and compare the ‘unknown’ item to a test key (a sample of gold with a known purity). If the scratch remains bright and solid, the item passes the 10kt acid test. If it fades, we return the item to the client, as we cannot purchase unmarked pieces that do not meet the 10kt acid test. If it passes the 10kt test, we proceed with a 14kt acid test. The process continues with increasingly stronger acids until a conclusive result is obtained.

For stamped items, we compare the item to a test key at the specific karat rather than starting from 10kt acid. If the item performs similarly to the test key, we purchase it at the stamped karat. If the test yields a close result, we give the item the benefit of the doubt. If it clearly does not test well at the stamped karat, we work to determine the true karat of the item.

X-Ray Fluorescence Testing buying gold in canada

If visual and scratch testing methods do not yield clear results, items can be tested using X-ray fluorescence scanning. This powerful state-of-the-art device provides detailed analysis by measuring the intensity of gold X-rays through wavelength dispersion analysis. Upon completion of the test, a comprehensive report indicates the percentages of gold content and other alloying metals such as copper, silver, zinc, etc. This method is highly accurate.

Specific Gravity Machine

The Specific Gravity Machine determines the purity of gold by measuring its density underwater. We weigh the item both on a normal scale and under water. The difference in weights determines the density of the item. Since gold is one of the densest elements, we can identify gold-plated items and determine the purity (karat) of gold based on density.

WEIGHT
Once all items have been sorted by karat, we proceed to weigh them on a scale. Our scale is regularly calibrated, and you can request a recalibration on the day if desired. The scale provides the true weight of your items in grams. Typically, we weigh all items identified at a particular karat together, but we can also weigh individual items upon request.

For items with stones or inserts, we subtract the estimated weight of those stones. Gems approximately the size of 1 carat diamonds weigh around 0.2 grams. We assess the rough size and number of stones in the items and deduct this weight from our estimate. For instance, if a piece has four small stones around 1/10th of a carat each, we subtract 4 times 1/10th of 0.2 grams (i.e., 0.08 grams). Please note that this is only an estimate provided to offer an initial quote.

QUOTING
Our prices are determined by the current market prices of gold and silver (please check today’s gold price in Quebec). Your payout is calculated based on the purity (karat) and weight of your items. We provide you with an estimate and allow you to decide which items you wish to sell. There is no commitment on your part.

Occasionally, some larger items may not be entirely composed of solid gold or silver. These items can be challenging to identify, as they may be heavily plated or filled with weights. In such cases, a final test before payment may be necessary to confirm the item’s authenticity. This test may involve cutting the piece, rendering it irreparable. Rest assured, we will seek your permission before conducting such tests. Essentially, by agreeing to the quoted price, we are committing to purchasing the item if it is genuine. However, if you prefer not to have the test performed on your item, we will gladly return it to you, but unfortunately, we will not be able to proceed with the purchase.

STONE REMOVAL AND PAYMENT
If you agree to sell your items and are satisfied with the quote provided, the buyer will proceed to remove any easily removable stones and inserts. Additionally, they will make an effort to remove any stones you specifically request. While small used stones typically hold little to no value on the open market, you may consider repurposing them for future jewelry designs. Subsequently, the items are re-weighed to adjust the final quote. We do not impose charges for testing or estimates, as you may encounter elsewhere, and you will receive payment on the spot without any hidden fees.

In the interest of safety for both parties, payouts exceeding $30 are issued by cheque, which can be directly deposited into your bank account.

MERCI!
